The Webb Telescope Created the Largest Map of the Universe

Astronomers using the James Webb Telescope have created the largest map of the Universe, depicting 800 thousand galaxies over about 13.5 billion years of existence.

The data obtained by the telescope were used by scientists from the COSMOS group to create the largest map of the Universe to date, COSMOS-Web. The James Webb Telescope studied dense and empty areas of space where there are few stars, gas clouds and other objects. In this way, researchers tried to find answers to questions about how the early Universe was formed.

This telescope allowed astronomers to discover 10 times more galaxies that were formed during the first 500 million years after the Big Bang than they expected.

Supermassive black holes, new types of galaxies and black holes were also discovered. Scientists were able to get answers to many questions, but they also had new ones. For example, they found out that the early Universe began to produce too much light too early, which casts doubt on some cosmological models.

Researchers from the COSMOS group processed the data for two years, creating accessible images and catalogs to maximize the range of researchers, including students. The work is currently ongoing. The data discovered will already change the view on the formation of our Universe.

Recall that scientists have discovered the eighth continent on Earth.
