How to care for colored hair and maintain vibrant color

Colored hair requires more gentle care because after dyeing it often becomes drier and loses its shine more quickly. To keep the shade looking beautiful for longer and the hair looking well-groomed, it is important to follow a few simple rules. At Joy-pup, we’ll tell you how to keep your color vibrant and your hair healthy, strong, and alive.

Sulfate-Free Shampoos

Regular shampoos with sulfates are not suitable for colored hair. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are aggressive cleansing agents that actively wash out pigment within 1–2 weeks and dehydrate the hair. Switch to products for colored hair with keratin or oils.

  • Choose shampoos with a pH of 4.5–5.5 – they help close the cuticle.
  • For cool blonde shades, use a purple (toning) shampoo once every 7–10 days.
  • For warm tones (red, copper), look for shampoos with added argan oil or keratin.
  • Wash your hair no more than 2–3 times a week with cool water: each wash leads to pigment loss.
  • Apply shampoo only to the roots, and let the foam cleanse the lengths.

Conditioner and Mask

Conditioner is essential after every wash. It temporarily smooths the cuticle scales, reduces breakage, and adds shine. Apply conditioner to the lengths and ends, avoiding the roots, and leave it on for 2–3 minutes before rinsing.

Deep nourishment is provided by masks, which should be used 1–2 times a week. For colored hair, masks with keratin, hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, or argan oil are especially effective. They replenish protein loss and help retain moisture inside the hair.

Heat Protection

Hairdryers, sun exposure, straighteners, and curling irons can significantly worsen the condition of colored hair, especially if it is already weakened after dyeing. Heat protection helps reduce damage from high temperatures, decreases dryness, and makes hair look smoother. If styling is unavoidable, it is better to dry hair at a moderate temperature and avoid overheating the lengths every day.

Washing with Warm Water

Colored hair is best washed with warm, not hot water. Water that is too hot causes faster pigment fading and can increase dryness. Wash your hair with warm water and finish with a slightly cooler rinse. Also, avoid washing your hair too often without necessity: the more frequent the cleansing, the faster the color loses its intensity. If your scalp gets oily quickly, choose a gentle shampoo for frequent use.

How to Prolong Color

To avoid visiting the salon every 3–4 weeks, use toning products: colored conditioners, pigmented masks, or color-refreshing sprays. They do not dye the hair but only coat it externally, refreshing the shade and masking slight regrowth. Use a toning shampoo once every 10 days and a pigment mask once every 2–3 weeks.
