Trinity Sunday is celebrated on the 50th day after the Resurrection of Christ, which is why it’s also called Pentecost. It always falls on a Sunday. To determine the date of Trinity Sunday, you need to:
- Determine the date of Orthodox Easter for the given year.
- Add 49 days (7 weeks) to find the Sunday on which Trinity Sunday falls.
In 2025, Easter is on April 20. Counting 50 days from that date gives us the date of Trinity Sunday — June 8, 2025.
When Trinity Sunday Will Be Celebrated in 2025
In 2025, Orthodox and Greek Catholic Christians will celebrate Trinity Sunday on June 8. This year is unique in that Easter for both Eastern and Western Christian traditions falls on the same day (April 20), so Trinity Sunday will also be celebrated simultaneously in both traditions. The Green Holidays, closely associated with Trinity Sunday, will last from June 9 to June 15.
Trinity Sunday symbolizes the unity of God in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes the concept of the Trinity, which is central to Christian theology. Trinity Sunday is also considered the birthday of the Church, as the descent of the Holy Spirit gave the apostles the strength and wisdom to preach. In folk tradition, the holiday is associated with the renewal of nature, the life-giving power of greenery, and the beginning of summer — hence the name “Green Holidays.”
The History of the Holy Trinity Holiday
Trinity Sunday has deep biblical roots. According to the New Testament, on the 50th day after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in the form of tongues of fire. This event, described in the Acts of the Apostles, marked the birth of the Christian Church, as the apostles received the gift of speaking in different languages and began preaching the Gospel around the world.
Trinity Sunday was officially established in 381 AD at the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople, when the dogma of the Holy Trinity was adopted. In pre-Christian times, this period was associated with pagan Green Holidays, which honored nature and marked the end of the spring cycle. With the adoption of Christianity, these traditions were adapted to the new religious context.
Traditions and Preparations for Trinity Sunday
Preparations for Trinity Sunday begin several days in advance.
- General cleaning: Homes are thoroughly cleaned, windows washed, curtains and towels laundered to ensure the house is tidy for the holiday.
- Gathering greenery: On the eve of Trinity Sunday, people gather fragrant herbs (calamus, mint, thyme) and tree branches to decorate their homes and churches.
- Parental Saturday: On Saturday, believers go to church and cemeteries to remember the deceased.
- Preparing the festive table: Housewives prepare dishes to be served during the family feast.
On Trinity Sunday, believers attend festive church services where special prayers are read and greenery is blessed — tree branches, herbs, and flowers. This greenery, symbolizing life and renewal, is used to decorate homes and church interiors as protection against evil and illness. Floors are strewn with calamus, mint and thyme are placed on windowsills, and doorways are adorned with tree branches.
After the service, families and friends gather for festive meals, as this is not a fasting day. Folk customs also include girls’ rituals such as wreath weaving and “kumming.” Girls would float wreaths on water to divine their future marriage. If the wreath floated far, it foretold an upcoming wedding. Trinity celebrations last three days — Sunday (the main day), Monday (Holy Spirit Day), and Tuesday, when merrymaking and round dances are held.
What Not to Do on Trinity Sunday
As with other major church holidays, there are certain prohibitions on Trinity Sunday, combining Christian teachings and folk beliefs:
- It is forbidden to work in the garden, clean, sew, wash, or do heavy labor, as the day is dedicated to spiritual rest.
- One should not quarrel, offend others, envy, or wish harm, to maintain the spiritual harmony of the holiday.
- During Mermaid Week, which starts with Trinity Sunday, folk beliefs warn against swimming, as mermaids might “drag” a person underwater.
- Weddings are not held on Trinity Sunday, as such marriages are believed to be unhappy.
- The Church condemns fortune-telling and other pagan rituals, even though they remain popular.
- Being stingy or refusing to give alms is considered a sin.
