A UK resident, Dave Richards, has become the first in the world to receive a facial prosthesis printed on a 3D printer. His face was damaged in a car accident.

The accident occurred in July 2021, when a 75-year-old man was hit by a drunk driver while riding a bicycle. The man underwent many surgeries to reconstruct his face, as well as a long rehabilitation. But in order to restore the man’s appearance, a prosthesis was needed. It was manufactured at the Bristol 3D Medical Centre.

This centre is considered the first in the UK to combine 3D visualization and printing in one room. The prostheses are created here using a PEEK 3D printer manufactured by Mini Factory. The center’s workers can use 3D models of damaged organs, which allows surgeons to determine exactly where to operate or whether there are problem areas that are best avoided.
