Aurora Borealis Observed on Mars for the First Time

Aurora Borealis has been recorded from the surface of Mars for the first time. NASA’s Perseverance rover has detected a faint green glow of atomic oxygen caused by a solar storm.

Previously, aurora borealis on this planet were only observed from orbit and in the ultraviolet range of wavelengths. The new discovery was recorded after a solar flare with a coronal mass ejection. Such an ejection reached Mars three days later, displacing energetic particles into the planet’s atmosphere and causing aurora borealis on the night side.
