OpenAI has unveiled a new browser, Atlas, for macOS, built on top of ChatGPT. This transforms everyday internet browsing into a fully-fledged conversation with artificial intelligence.

Atlas can perform a variety of actions at the user’s request—searching for information, scheduling meetings, booking events, or even building an online shopping cart. According to the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, the future of browsers “looks like a conversation,” as AI paves the way for a reimagining of the very concept of internet browsing—just as tabs once transformed the way we browse the web.

Atlas is currently only available to macOS users. After installation, you can transfer data from other browsers, activate the “browser memory” feature, and make Atlas your primary internet browser. It’s the presence of built-in memory that distinguishes Atlas from traditional solutions. ChatGPT remembers websites you’ve visited and uses this context for personalized searches – finding the pages you need instantly and tailored to your preferences.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers gain access to an advanced “agent mode.” In this mode, the AI can analyze websites, plan trips, place orders, and perform other complex tasks. In an OpenAI demonstration, for example, the agent calculated the ingredients for a dinner for eight people and automatically added everything to the online shopping cart.

Atlas’s interface is visually reminiscent of ChatGPT: instead of the traditional search bar, it features a chat window. Users can open websites, communicate with the AI in the sidebar, search history using natural queries, or even edit emails directly in the browser.

As a reminder, we previously reported that ChatGPT now features adult content.
