OpenAI is implementing a special mode in ChatGPT for users under 18. This will enhance the safety of minors when communicating with artificial intelligence.
As explained by the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, the system will automatically activate an adapted version for teenagers if it determines that the user is underage. In this mode, the chatbot will limit access to explicit and sexually explicit content. If a risk of self-harm is detected, ChatGPT will alert parents or even law enforcement of the risk to the user’s life.
The company is developing new technologies to verify age. Specifically, verification will be required. If this is impossible or questionable, the system will activate “teen mode” by default. In some countries, users will be required to verify their age with an ID card or passport.

Parental controls in the chatbot will allow users to connect a parent’s account to their teen’s profile via email, limit the time spent using the service, deactivate certain features, send notifications to parents if the user’s behavior is unstable, and customize the style and content of responses.
This decision was made after extensive consultations with experts in the fields of security, psychology, and digital ethics. ChatGPT is officially available to users aged 13 and older.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that ChatGPT pushed a teenager to suicide.
