Recently, scientists have questioned the idea that there are only four oceans on Earth. The National Geographic Society has acknowledged the existence of a fifth ocean. It is not new in geological terms, but it is a change in the way we perceive maps.
We are talking about Antarctica, whose unique landscape until recently was considered only an extension of three separate oceans: the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic. Now the National Geographic Society has made a decision that changes our perception. It has made a statement that has opened access to an ocean that has always been there, but has never officially received attention.
As the famous marine biologist and explorer of National Geographic Sylvia Earle explained, this ocean, which is surrounded by the incredibly fast Antarctic Circumpolar Current, is the only one that touches the other three oceans and completely envelops the continent, rather than being in its embrace.

The new ocean reflects its icy state and the fact that it is still a little-studied territory. It was called the Southern Ocean, and scientists have yet to discuss what really sets it apart from the rest. At the same time, it affects everything: weather conditions, oxygen and much more.
It is also noted that the Southern Ocean is a frozen territory, which is home to many unique animals. There are penguins, which need shores to live, seals, seabirds.
Recall that scientists recently named the largest bird in the history of the Earth.
