Astronomers have discovered the exoplanet PSR J2322-2650b, which has no analogues among known planets. According to the study, its formation does not fit any existing theories of planetary origin.

PSR J2322-2650b may become one of the most unusual discovered worlds in our galaxy – the Milky Way. This planet is a “hot Jupiter” and orbits a millisecond pulsar, experiencing the strong gravitational pull of its star.

Under the influence of this pull, the planet is deformed and takes on a lemon-like shape. The atmosphere of PSR J2322-2650b contains carbon vapor, likely helium-based, and is moving at high speed in a direction opposite to the planet’s rotation.

As a reminder, scientists have detected an exoplanet with a double gas tail for the first time.
