NASA has released a new image of the Sun, which reveals an unusual “smile.” The image was taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on October 28 – just before Halloween.
In the image, active light regions and dark coronal holes are arranged in a pattern resembling a face with eyes, a nose, and a wide smile. The image was obtained using the Atmospheric Imaging Instrument (AIA), which is used to study the structure and activity of the solar surface in detail in high resolution.

The dark zones that form the “smile” are coronal holes – regions where the magnetic field is open, releasing streams of charged particles known as the solar wind into space. These streams are currently heading toward Earth.
A similar phenomenon has been observed before – in 2014, SDO also detected a “smiling” face on the Sun’s surface, reminiscent of a jack-o’-lantern.
As a reminder, NASA recently announced that Earth is running out of oxygen.
