In icons and paintings, Jesus Christ is usually depicted as a fair-skinned man with long hair and a thick beard. However, experts note that this appearance is far from reality.
According to the Daily Mail, based on historical and anthropological data, it is possible to imagine what a person from the area and time period in which Jesus lived might have looked like.
Researchers claim that Jesus originated from Galilee, a region in the Middle East inhabited by Jews in the first century. This determines his ethnic type and basic physical features. He most likely had dark olive skin, dark brown eyes, and thick, naturally slightly curly black hair. Constant exposure to the sun would have tanned his skin, and the image of long, flowing hair is a later artistic invention that doesn’t correspond to historical reality.

Reconstructions show that Christ’s appearance was far from refined as he is often depicted. Since he worked as a carpenter, his body must have been strong and muscular, as his profession required strength and endurance. Furthermore, he walked extensively while traveling through the region and did not always have enough food, which would have made his physique appear dry and sinewy, rather than frail or delicate.
Even Jesus’ clothing differed from the usual image of a long white tunic, as such attire was considered feminine at the time. He most likely wore simple leather sandals, similar to those discovered by archaeologists during excavations at Masada.
