Scientists have determined that one of the most significant monuments of the Mayan civilization is the Aguada Fénix architectural complex, located in the Mexican state of Tabasco. It was built approximately three thousand years ago and symbolized a model of the universe.
According to a study published in the journal Science Advances (Sci Adv), the grandiose structure, stretching almost nine kilometers, is shaped like a cross. This symbol for the Mayans represented the universe and the cyclical nature of time, emphasizing the profound spiritual concept of their architecture.
In the central part of the monument, archaeologists discovered two crossed pits containing sacrificial offerings—shells, jade figurines, and greenstone. These artifacts indicate the ritual nature of the site and its special significance to ancient society. Remarkably, the complex shows no signs of social stratification: archaeologists found no palaces or statues of rulers. Researchers believe the construction, which took over 10 million man-days, was carried out collectively, without centralized control. The shared goal of creating an architectural representation of the cosmos and a space for shared rituals united thousands of people, proving that great achievements are possible without authoritarian rule.
It was previously reported that specialists had solved the mystery of the Mayan lunar calendar found in the Dresden Codex, one of the few surviving manuscripts of this civilization. It contains a table of 405 new moons, which allowed the Mayans to predict the dates of full and new moons with an accuracy of one day.
