The retinal vascular system may become a new marker of heart health and the rate of biological aging in humans.
Scientists have found that changes in the vascular structure of the eyes are directly linked to the same genes that are responsible for a predisposition to cardiovascular disease.
The research team analyzed data from nearly 75,000 Canadians who underwent retinal scanning, blood tests, and provided access to their medical records. The results showed that the more complex and extensive the vascular network in the retina, the lower the risk of stroke, the less inflammatory processes in the body, and the longer the life expectancy.

During the blood analysis, the specialists identified eight key proteins that indirectly influence this relationship. Two of them are closely linked to chronic inflammation, a key mechanism in vascular aging and the development of atherosclerosis. Scientists believe that these proteins could potentially form the basis for developing drugs capable of preventing heart disease, especially in older people.
As a reminder, we previously reported on the creation of an artificial intelligence-based eye implant that will help blind people see again.
