Swiss researchers from EPFL have presented the world’s first robot composed entirely of edible materials, including its own power source. The device is constructed from biodegradable substances such as wax and gelatin, and movement is provided by a pneumatic mechanism triggered by a chemical reaction.

Instead of traditional plastic and metal parts, the robot uses only food-grade components. Furthermore, the developers have created flavored versions, such as grenadine syrup. The key feature of the technology is an edible “battery” based on the interaction of citric acid and baking soda.

These substances are separated by a thin membrane. When the pressure inside increases, the membrane ruptures, triggering a reaction that releases carbon dioxide. It is this gas that creates the impulse that propels the robot. All components of the design are completely safe, allowing the system to be used as an environmentally friendly power source for other biodegradable devices.

The project was developed as part of the RoboFood initiative, which aims to deliver medications to wild animals without contact. The robot can move and resemble prey, making it capable of delivering the vaccine as discreetly as possible. The technology is already being tested on volunteers. Project leader Dario Floreano considers this development a step toward more sustainable, safe, and environmentally friendly robotics.

A kitchen robot that independently creates recipes has been created in the US.
