On average, a person has from 100 to 150 eyelashes on the upper eyelid, and from 50 to 100 on the lower. Each eyelash goes through three stages:
- anagen (growth phase) – lasts from 30 to 45 days;
- catagen (resting phase) – about 2-3 weeks;
- telogen (shedding phase) — the final stage, when the eyelash falls out and a new one begins to grow in its place.
Normally, 1 to 5 eyelashes fall out per day from each eyelid. That is, in total, you can lose 2 to 10 eyelashes per day. This is a completely natural process associated with the renewal of hair. If shedding increases (more than 10 eyelashes per day), this may be due to:
- stress;
- improper care;
- use of low-quality cosmetics;
- hormonal changes;
- vitamin deficiency.
How many eyelashes normally fall out per year?
If on average 2 to 10 eyelashes fall out per day, then in a year this will amount to:
- Minimum: 2 eyelashes × 365 days = 730 eyelashes per year.
- Maximum: 10 eyelashes × 365 days = 3650 eyelashes per year.
This means that during the year, all eyelashes are completely renewed several times. However, there is no need to worry – new eyelashes always grow in place of the fallen ones, going through all the stages of the cycle.
When should you worry?
If you notice that more than 10 eyelashes are falling out per day, or you notice noticeable thinning, you should pay attention to:
- Diet;
- Stress level;
- Quality of cosmetics;
- Health status (especially hormonal background).
