Salsa is one of the most popular Mexican appetizers. It goes perfectly with nachos, tacos, burritos, meat and fish, and can also be served as a standalone cold appetizer. We at joy-pup will tell you how to make classic salsa at home. Read also how to make a delicious fish appetizer.
Ingredients for classic salsa
- Fresh tomatoes – 3-4 pcs. (medium-sized, ripe)
- Onions – ½ pcs. (preferably white or red)
- Garlic – 1 clove (optional)
- Chili pepper (jalapeno or other hot) – 1 pc. (to taste)
- Fresh cilantro — a small bunch
- Lime juice — 1 tbsp
- Salt — ½ tsp
- Ground black pepper — to taste
Step-by-step recipe
- Wash the tomatoes thoroughly and cut into small cubes. If you want the salsa to be less watery, remove the seeds and juice. Peel the onion and chop finely. Chop the garlic with a knife or press it through a garlic press.
- Cut the chili pepper lengthwise, remove the seeds (if you don’t want the salsa to be too hot) and chop finely. It’s better to wear gloves when handling hot peppers — this will protect your skin from burns.
- Wash the cilantro, dry it and chop finely. This herb gives the salsa its characteristic fresh taste and aroma.
- Put all the ingredients in a deep bowl. Add salt, pepper and freshly squeezed lime juice. Mix well.
- Let the salsa sit in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend better. If desired, you can puree the salsa in a blender for a smoother texture.
