Fashion of the 90s is an explosive mixture of bright colors, denim and the spirit of freedom. Trends and styles that were once considered modern and bold become dated and ridiculous, only to be reborn decades later. We at Joy-pup will remember the clothes that were worn in the 90s and analyze what is in the wardrobe of today’s fashionistas.
Features of the fashion of the 90s
The fashion of the 90s is not so far from today. Modern outfits and images contain many references to that rebellious time. It was a post-perestroika time when I wanted to challenge dullness and gain individuality. Then they didn’t think about any style directions, they wore what they could get, and therefore the images were chaotic and defiant.
There were practically no gender differences. For example, Boys sweaters were worn by both girls and boys. Girls wore it with a miniskirt, dolchik tights, pumps and bright plastic jewelry.
Fashionable clothes were brought by shuttles from Poland, the Baltic states, and Turkey. After the opening of the Iron Curtain, a lot of imported products poured in. And young people, tired of conservatism and limited clothing, wanted riotous colors and bizarre styles. The madness of fashion, when wearing all the fashionable things at once, formed a special style, which is now called the style of the 90s.
The clothes that we wore in the 90s were a trend in the West in the 80s. And those outfits that fashionistas flaunted in the US and Europe in the 90s came to us in the zero: crop tops, platforms, patent leather, slip dress, chokers, layered haircut like Rachel from Friends.
Varenki, pyramids, malvins, montans
In fact, all these are the names of jeans. These magical things were more desirable than the little-known outfits from Dolce & Gabbana or Versace in the 90s. Malvinas combined with a Boys sweater and you are the most popular girl in the disco. The denim jacket added to the coolness. True, they looked like this without exception, which can be seen in the photographs of those years. High-waisted straight-leg jeans that were popular back then, we now call mom jeans and are still loved by today’s fashionistas. And the pyramids were transformed into boyfriend jeans.
Slacks
Slacks in the 90s were also at the peak of popularity. This model has a high waist that flares from the hips and tapers towards the bottom. There were pleats on the waist, like bananas, which began to be worn in the 80s. If you want to plunge into nostalgia, choose chinos, which are similar in style to the once wildly popular slacks.
Mini skirts
Provocative miniskirts were the first challenge of the new time – and the shorter the better. Leather and denim with a number of metal buttons in front were popular. One of the most fashionable attributes in the post-Soviet past was an elastic skirt (“herringbone”), which was often worn with leggings and a voluminous sweater. Under the skirts they wore rubber “soap dishes” (a prototype of ballet flats) or patent leather shoes.
Teenage girls adored the layered lambada denim skirt paired with a white cambric lace blouse.
Leather jacket
An object of desire not only for rock fans, but for all the youth of the 90s. The symbol of that era is consistently worn by modern influencers for several seasons in a row. A leather jacket can often be found in the collections of different designers at Fashion Weeks.
Leggings
Leggings in the 90s were usually worn in black, but the apogee of the lust of fashionistas is multi-colored models or with animal prints. They were worn under skirts, dresses or with elongated t-shirts with inscriptions. A variety of ordinary leggings is a model with hairpins (as they said then – “with brakes”), which fixes the bottom of the product, thanks to a thin detail. The analogue of leggings now is leggings, which are used by girls not only in sports, but also in everyday bows.
Bicycle shorts
Tight cycling shorts were considered one of the most fashionable things in the 90s. Knee-length cycling shorts were combined with an elongated T-shirt with a pattern, usually an American cartoon character. The retro look was completed with comfortable sandals with elastic bands, the popularity of which has revived now. Today, cycling shorts are also not considered exclusively a sports item. They are combined with crop tops, voluminous jackets, high-heeled shoes.
Rough boots
The grunge movement created an army of fashionistas dressed in rough combat boots, leather, chains and combat makeup. Post-Soviet youth sought to show their rebellious spirit in ripped jeans, baggy T-shirts, plaid shirts, leather jackets.
Elastic waistband
For fashionistas of the 90s, the outfit was not limited to clothes. Such an important accessory as a wide elastic belt was invariably present in the image of a girl. It was made of elastic material with metal fasteners. An elastic belt was worn over a blouse with small polka dots, which was worn loose, in combination with a herringbone skirt. Now a wide belt is also in fashion, but it is sewn from textiles or eco-leather.
Earrings
Hoop earrings also reached the peak of popularity in the 90s. These circle-shaped earrings added a touch of flair to a lot of outfits. The only rule when wearing this daring jewelry is to choose a larger size.
Scrunchy
The wide scrunchy, now called scrunch, was a highly sought -after hair accessory in the 90s. It was produced in a variety of colors, sizes and materials. Interest in scrunch faded in the 2000s, but is resurging again now. This practical and spectacular accessory can be seen both in the collections of different designers and on the hair of Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, Selena Gomez and many other celebrities.
Even actor Jason Momoa, who announced his breakup with Lisa Bonet, also did not miss the opportunity to wear crunch as a bracelet. The performer of the role of Aquaman came to the Oscars in a flawless dusty pink suit with a matching hair band at the wrist.
