The popular British singer Adele found herself at the center of a scandal. She was banned from performing the popular hit Million Years Ago, which was released in 2015. This song was recognized as plagiarism.
Thus, Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes asked the court to reconsider the similarity between Adele’s composition and his music for the song Mulheres, which was performed by singer Martinho da Vila in 1995. The composer’s lawyer noted that this landmark of Brazilian music was often copied to create successful international hits.
After an expert assessment of the hits, the court sided with the composer and proved him right. Adele was ordered to immediately remove the hit Million Years Ago from all streaming platforms. And Toninho Geraes demanded that he be paid $160,000 in moral damages and compensation for damages to his producer Greg Kurstin.
If the demands are not met, then Adele’s labels, Sony and Universal, will be fined $8,000.
