The gunsmith of Alec Baldwin’s Rust will spend 18 months in prison. The girl Anna Gutierrez loaded the gun from which the famous actor fired. As a result, cameraman Galina Hutchins died.
A jury at her trial found Anna Gutierrez guilty of involuntary manslaughter in October 2021. It is stated that she kept live ammunition on the set, which she used to load Baldwin’s revolver. This is a violation of film industry practices.
In addition, the gunsmith did not follow safety rules, leaving the weapon unattended and allowing the actor to brandish it. On the day of the tragedy, the girl accidentally mixed different types of ammunition in the props tray – live ammunition and dummies.
Galina Hutchins, who was 42 years old at the time of her death, stood at the camera that was to be used to film the scene. When Baldwin fired, the bullet fatally wounded the woman. She was airlifted to hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to severe bleeding.
The lawyer asked to give the gunsmith a suspended sentence, because the girl had no previous convictions. He also said that Anna became a “scapegoat” on the chaotic set. After all, she was not given time to check the weapon. But the state prosecutor asked for the gunsmith to be sentenced to 18 months in prison due to a lack of remorse and citing her calls from her cell in which she made unflattering comments about jurors and judges.
It is known that Alec Baldwin will also stand trial for manslaughter in July 2024. He denies all charges.
